Kingscliff Beach NSW
What an amazing weekend for our competitors in the Qualifier Series! On Saturday…Rees, Tony and Bill spent the day watching the competitors. Each group of four was sent out for 10 minutes, then they came to the beach for some feedback and then back out for another 10 minutes. This was repeated twice and what a difference it seemed to make to these guys.
Having three highly experienced surfers critiquing your surfing and giving advice on how to improve, was a very valuable experience for everyone. As Graham Roberts said to me, imagine if we could have had this experience when we were surfing back in the B Grade. Thanks to our three super coaches for your dedication, enthusiasm and willingness to give back to the sport. And of course a huge thank you to all the other guys who came along to support the comp surfers. Russell Hudson did his usual magic making sure the comp ran smoothly.
Sunday was the formal comp day and this gave the guys the opportunity to put their skills into practice. The waves at Kingscliff beachbreak were only small and quite difficult to read, but as the day progressed the guys seemed to master the break.
The competition was fierce, everyone was there to win and put 100% into their surfing. All the way through, it was difficult to predict who was going to make the final and win. We even had Michael and Donna from Vella Beach (near Nambucca Heads) come all the way to Kingy to watch the comp. And Michael Eddy travelled from Victoria, now that is super keen! The vibe was wonderful, actually it was one of the most hotly contested comps I’ve been to.
The semis resulted in a few interference calls. Disappointed surfers learnt the hard way. Eventually the final surfers paddled out. The lead kept swapping as more waves were caught.
But at the end, Scott Murnain finished in first place with some great stylish reos on well-chosen waves. Scott deserves great congratulations as he won this comp the hard way, working through two reps to eventually come out on top.
Brett Titterton finished a close second. Brett had the highest scored wave in the final, but struggled to find a second decent wave.
Third place was Peter Klein who surfed consistently and Russell Zahn made a fantastic return to competition with a fourth placing.
Other surfers who performed to a high level included Brian Spicer, Eric Massey, Bryce Campbell and John Lemon.
Also a big thank you to Jeff Butterworth for taking photos in between heats in his first ever waveski comp.
Congratulations Aussie waveski surfers. This weekend demonstrated your love of this sport and what a true family we all are.
