Tony Cherry Wins
The 2017 Championship race has now come to a close with Tony Cherry eventually winning the Open Australian Title by a 2040 points over Dale Randahl. These two great surfers have battled it out all year with Dale going into the final comp – The Australian Open- slightly ahead. Tony had to finish one place ahead of Dale to win the title and that is exactly what he did. In the final comp for the year Tony finished second and Dale third. An exciting and close finish to a fantastic year.
In third place was Rees Duncan and Graham Lancaster finished fourth in Australia. All four of these surfers are absolutely amazing and we hope that they all make it to the 2018 World Titles in Spain, to give our country a chance at snatching back that trophy!
Fifth to eighth positions were won by Bill Campbell, Mark Spencer, Russell Hudson and Graham Roberts.
The Women’s championship was easily won by Savannah Campbell, making this her first Australian Title and we are sure it won’t be her last. Karen Campbell was second and Lisa Ryan third.
Dale Randahl won the Masters Australian Title. The usual three were snapping at his heels! Tony Cherry came second, followed by Rees Duncan and Graham Lancaster in closely fought competitions.
The Grand Masters (50 to 59) was won by Bill Campbell. He was followed by Dave Howard, Mark Spencer and Russell Hudson.
Graham Roberts proved too strong in the Veterans comp, winning from Col Sugars, Jeff Gray, Wayne Fernance and David Andrews. It is wonderful to see Wayne and David competing in this field.
The Legends was won by Garry Ross. Billy Dalton was second and Joe Whitely third. Both Billy and Jo (who are now 70) have had significant health issues during the year, but despite this they turned up and put on a tremendous show. The friendship and sportsmanship shown is this section is a shining example to all competitors.
In 2017 the Qualifiers event was introduced. And this turned out to be the most hotly contested section! Training days at the beginning of the year by Rees, Tony and Bill, gave these guys and girls some very valuable feedback and it was a pleasure to watch their skills grow over the year. In the end, Mick Jones won with Brian Spicer finishing a close second. Savannah Campbell was third and Scott Murnain finished in fourth position. Other notable competitors in this section included Brett Titterton (who injured himself in the final comp at the Aussie Open), John Lemon, Jeff Gray, Dean Warner, Eric Massey and Steve Waters. There were many other surfers who did well in this division and our hope is that they continue to push the boundaries in 2018.
Congratulations everybody on a great year! Let’s make 2018 even bigger and better.
